Mrs. Mary Ann Dean Smith, 87, of Jaudon Road, Elberton, wife of the late Joe Mitchell Smith, passed away on Monday, March 28, 2022, at her residence.
Mrs. Smith was born in Franklin County on March 10, 1935, daughter of the late James Howard Dean and Nettie Dove Dean Gowder. She worked for 46 years from Elberton Housing Authority, retiring as Director in 2011. Mary Ann joined Northside Baptist Church in 1956 and was a faithful member for 66 years. She served as treasurer for 43 years and was a former Sunday school teacher. She was a member of Elbert County Humane Society and a former youth basketball coach. In her spare time, Mary Ann enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, and often shared the fruits of her labor with her family and friends. She was an excellent cook who will be remembered for her homemade biscuits and chocolate cakes.
Survivors include her children: Randy and Peggy Smith of Elberton and Cathy and Keith Holloman of Hartwell; sister, Mildred Mattox of Elberton; grandchildren: Jake and Chrissy Smith, Brooke and Heys Wade, and Megan and Justin Vermeer; great-grandchildren: Ava Blakey, Tucker Smith, Max Smith, Hayden Vermeer, and Owen Wade; and numerous other relatives and friends.
In addition to her husband and parents, she is preceded in death by her sisters: Katie Turner and Anna Roukoski.
Funeral services celebrating her life will be held on Wednesday, March 30, at 2 o’clock at Northside Baptist Church with the Rev. David McConnell officiating. Entombment will follow in Forest Hills Memorial Park Mausoleum with the Rev. Dan Fernandez officiating. Mary Ann will lie in state for one hour prior to the service.
The family is at the residence of Randy and Peggy Smith, Jaudon Road, Elberton, and will receive friends at Berry Funeral Home on Tuesday, March 29, from 6:00-8:00p.m.
