Mrs. Mary Virginia Smith passed away Sunday, April 13, 2014 at her home in Butler, Georgia. She was born February 5, 1926 in Bacova, Bath County, Virginia to Benjamin Harrison Cleek and Bertha Jane Gum Cleek. After graduating from high school, she moved to Washington, DC where she worked for the War Department as a Clerk-Stenographer. There she met and married George Thomas Smith on May 28, 1947. He preceded her in death on July 26, 2013 after 66 years of marriage. They moved to Georgia where they had their four children. In 1973 she retired and moved to Butler, Georgia where they farmed and later started the Seed Cleaning Service. She was a devoted member of Mt Pisgah Baptist Church and enjoyed serving her church, her neighbors and community. She is survived by her loving children: Thomas H. (Glenita) Smith of Butler, Georgia; Janet (Mark) Thomas of Warner Robbins, Georgia and Pamela J. Smith (Ron Ruppert) of Henderson, Nevada; her sister-in-law Irene Butler of Elberton, GA; her grandchildren: Lynda (William) White of Houston, Texas; Christopher (Alexandria DellaVecchia) Smith of Reynolds, Georgia; Ian Ruppert of Henderson, Nevada; Jenny, Sara, Jonas, and Mary Thomas all of Warner Robbins, Georgia; Elizabeth (Donald) Mateyko of Arnold, Missouri and her great-grandchildren: Benjamin and Cotton White of Houston, Texas; Freesia Smith and Mae Della Vecchia of Reynolds, Georgia; Skyler, Madison, George and Samantha Mateyko of Arnold, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her husband George, her parents, a daughter Velma Smith, a granddaughter Candida Lynn Smith and a sister Bertha Lucille Hill. Funeral services will be held in Elberton, GA on Thursday, April 17, 2014, at 3PM in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home, Elberton, Georgia with Pastor Donald Ray Trippe and Mark Thomas officiating. Viewing will be from 2:00pm until 3:00pm with services to follow. A Memorial service will be held in Butler, GA at Mt Pisgah Baptist Church on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at 6:30pm. In lieu of Flowers please make Memorial contributions in her name to the children's AWANA program of Mt Pisgah Baptist Church, P.O. Box 2050, Butler, GA 31006 or the charity of your choice.
