Mrs. Maxine Jacquelyn Goss Harris, better known as "Jackie" or "Mama Jac", passed away on Thursday, March 27, 2025, just five months shy of her 100th birthday. Although unexpected, Mama Jac passed away peacefully in her sleep at her daughter's home in Bowman, GA.
Jackie is survived by her daughters: Beverly (Henry) Drennan, Charlene Brown, and Pat (Gary) Jarvis; grandchildren: Tammy Brown, Scott Brown, Chad (Julie) Brown, Michael Drennan, Michelle (Darrell) Dickerson, Greg Jarvis, Jon (Joanna) Jarvis, and Shannon (Candi) Jarvis; and several great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and other relatives.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Victor Hugo “Daddy Vic” Harris, Jr.; parents, Robert Emile Goss and Lillie Amarintha Maxwell Goss; son-in-law, Virgil Brown; and siblings: George Goss, Charlie Goss, and Marilene Moon.
Jackie was born in Pensacola, FL on August 25, 1925, where her father was stationed between WWI and WWII with the United States Navy. The family later moved to Kerrville, TX where she started school. They would move one more time to her parents’ hometown of Bowman, GA where she finished school, married, and would live the remainder of her life. During her younger years, she loved playing basketball.
Jackie was a staple at Wright Garment Company in Bowman, GA where she worked for nearly 50 years. Her work ethic was admirable, and she touched the lives of many people during her tenure there. She was a lifelong member of Fork Creek Baptist Church where she served as Sunday school secretary for many years.
Jackie never met a stranger and always expressed her thoughts candidly. Her vivacious personality gave her the ability to make everyone feel welcome and love. Mama Jac’s home was a gathering place for the family, where she delighted in hosting Sunday dinners and celebrating Christmas together each year. Through arts and crafts, and putting puzzles together, she generously passed on her creativity and love to her family.
Mama Jac’s life will be celebrated on Sunday, March 30, 2025. The family will receive friends from 1:00-2:30p.m. at Berry Funeral Home, followed by a service at 3:00p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Officiating will be the Rev. Bill Vaughn, the Rev. Gary Purvis, and Mr. Gary Jarvis. She will be laid to rest in the Fork Creek Baptist Church cemetery.
Flowers are accepted and contributions may be made in her memory to Fork Creek Baptist Church, 1972 Fork Creek Circle, Bowman, GA 30624, or to Gideons International, PO Box 6211, Elberton, GA 30635.
For the last few years of her life, the love that Mama Jac so selflessly gave to her family was returned to her. Her three daughters honored their mother’s request for never having to be a resident of a nursing facility. The generosity and devotion of her three girls and their husbands allowed her to remain at home with them, and she was forever grateful. Her legacy will continue with the current four generations of her family, as well as with generations to come.
