Morrel (Morrell) Kipling Perkins, Sr., age 92, of Greenbriar Avenue, Cartersville, Georgia, died Monday,February 13, 2O12. Mr. Perkins was born November 24, 1919 in Emmanuel County, Georgia, a son of the late Mason Bliss Perkins and Nora Smith Perkins. He served in the U.S. Army at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, earning the rank of Corporal. He was assigned to the kitchen, where he fell in love with food preparation. He was a member of the Faith Methodist Church in Cartersville and later attended First Congregational Methodist Church. A well-known businessman in Cartersville, Mr. Perkins was the owner and operator of Morrells Restaurant for 36 years, owned and operated Child's Monument Company and was the former owner of Sunset Memory Gardens. His father. Mason Bliss Perkins, was Principal of Kingston Elementary School in 1929 and also an accomplished pianist. Mr. Perkins roomed in the old bank building. That fact inspired Morrell to purchase the bank building, restore it from the ground up and in 1996 opened Morrell's Corner Cafe. Thus began the purchase of several other dilapidated buildings in downtown Kingston. Morrell set about to restore the buildings, renting some and opening other businesses including a grocery store and state of the art tanning salon in others. He was a hardworking man with a love for his community and family. He was loved dearly and will be sorely missed. Survivors include his wife of fifty seven years, Doris Childs Perkins, and his children, Jeanette Perkins — Graves, of Kingston, Deborah Perkins Turner, of Cartersville, Frank L. Perkins, of Cartersville and Morrell Kipling Perkins, Jr., of Cartersville, nine grandchildren, twenty three great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father, Mason Bliss Perkins, his mother, Nora Smith Perkins, brother,Schumann Perkins, twin sister, Vernille Trenton Waldrep,brother, Frank Strauss Perkins, sister, Annie Ruth Blackburn, sister, Leola Norine Derlso, a daughter, Charlotte Lorraine Perkins —Johnson, and a step- son, Clarence Robert (Bob) Cantrell, Jr. Funeral services will be held 11:OO A.M. Wednesday, February IS, 2O12 from the Chapel of the Owen Funeral Home with Rev. Nathan Sanders officiating. The family will receive friends at Owen Funeral Home Tuesday night, February 14, 2O12 from 5:OO till 8:OO P.M. The body will be transferred to Elberton, Georgia where a visitation will be held from 2:OO till 3:00 P.M. Thursday, February 16, 2O12 at the Woodlawn United Methodist Church with interment services to follow there in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are asked to be made to the Woodlawn United Methodist Church Building Fund, Elberton, Georgia.
