Mrs. Naomi Ruth Smith Grimes, 89, of Elberton, passed away Tuesday at Piedmont Athens Regional.A native of Elbert County, she was the daughter of the late Ernest Lee and Annie Kate Mauldin Smith. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Grimes was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Billy Mathew Grimes, with whom she had celebrated 59 years of marriage before his passing in 2006.Mrs. Grimes was a self-employed drafter in the granite industry, as well as a seamstress in the textile industry.She was a faithful member of Francis Asbury United Methodist Church. Mrs. Grimes was an avid gardener and thoroughly enjoyed working in her yard.She will be remembered by many for her outstanding musical talents as she played the guitar and sang.Though she loved gardening and music, her greatest joys came from those who lovingly called her “Naenae”--- her precious grandbabies. Survivors include son and daughter-in-law, Ronnie and Mickey Grimes of Dewy Rose; daughter and son-in-law, Tricia and Eddie Grizzle of Elberton; and four grandchildren, Tami and Johney Berryman of Hartwell, Billy Grimes of Dewy Rose, Laurie and Wesley King of Royston, and Lana and Shane Baker of Star, S.C.She also leaves behind great-grandchildren: Kyle Campbell, Chelsea and Brent Driscoll, Mackenzi Elrod, Brody Grimes, Brittin Grimes, Briar Grimes, Brendan King, Camaron King, Jarrett and Brittany Berryman and Travis and Megan Berryman; Vince Baker and Kristin Baker; and great-great-grandchildren: Presley Berryman, Charlotte Berryman, Emmy Berryman, Bailey Driscoll, Dawson Driscoll, and Chandler. Funeral services were held on Thursday, September 24th at 2:00 p.m. in Francis Asbury United Methodist Church with Rev. Tim Savelle and Rev. Calvin Ward officiating.Interment followed in Elmhurst Cemetery with Kyle Campbell, Brent Driscoll, Mark Campbell, Jarrett Berryman, Billy Grimes and Brody Grimes serving as pallbearers.The family received friends Wednesday eveningat Hicks Funeral Home. Flowers were graciously accepted, and contributions may be made in her memory to Francis Asbury UMC, 1016 Ruckersville Rd., Elberton, GA. 30635. Arrangements for Mrs. Naomi Ruth Smith Grimes were in the care of Hicks Funeral Home & Cremation Services of Elberton.
