Robert "Bob" Jesse Slocumbe, Sr.

Mr. Robert "Bob" Jesse Slocumbe, Sr., 95, died peacefully on Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at Magnolia Estates in Elberton.

The son of Robert L. And Nellie Brown Slocumbe, Bob was born September 28, 1928 in Marion, SC. After graduating Berry College in Rome, GA, he immediately joined the military where he served as a sergeant in the United States Marine Corp during the Korean War. After the war, he accepted a sales position with Phillips Petroleum Company in Atlanta. He eventually joined Heard Oil Company in Elberton, where he raised his family and spent the rest of his life. Bob eventually retired as the owner of Slocumbe Oil Company. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Elberton, where he served as a former deacon.

Mr. Slocumbe was preceded in death by his first wife and mother of his children, Joan C. Slocumbe, his son Robert J. Slocumbe, Jr., his granddaughter, Lauren E. Slocumbe, his parents, brother and three sisters.

Mr. Slocumbe is survived by his wife of 29 years, Marilyn Neal Slocumbe, his daughter, Lawana S. Pennington (Steve) of Statesboro, his stepson, Jeff Whitlow (Ruthie) of Savannah, and his stepdaughter Jennifer W. Plourde (Jim) of Greer, South Carolina and daughter-in-law: Lisa Slocumbe of Athens. He is also survived by three grandchildren, Robert J. Slocumbe, III, Robert C. Pennington, and Reid C. Pennington (Mary-Lynn) five step grandchildren Aubrey and Avery Plourde, Drew Whitlow, Anna W. Jensen and Margaret Bryant, and one great-grandchild, Thomas D. Pennington. 

Funeral services to celebrate Mr. Slocumbe’s life will be held 11AM, Saturday, June 15 in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home with Mr. Steve Pennington officiating. Interment will be in Elmhurst Cemetery.The family will receive friends from 10AM to 11AM just prior to the service at Berry Funeral Home.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Magnolia Estates for the excellent care given to Mr. Slocumbe over the last 18 months and his personal caregiver Tangelia Blackmon.
