Mr. Robert Joe Brown, age 83, of Hartwell Highway, Elberton, husband of 46 years to the late Malinda Hembree Brown, passed away on Saturday night, July 27, 2024, at his residence with loved ones by his side.
Affectionately known as “Mule”, Robert was born in Elberton on April 22, 1941, only child of the late Fred and Mildred Elizabeth Fleming Brown. He was a graduate of Elbert County High School who received a scholarship to Clemson University but could not attend due to a life altering car accident. His determination to overcome his injuries carried on throughout his life. He was a lifelong member of Concord United Methodist Church and retired as a truck driver after 22 years of service with Argo Trucking to take care of his wife.
Good with his hands, there was nothing Robert bought that he didn’t modify to his liking. He was also his son Steve’s kart mechanic, helping him to win many kart races, including some championships. Robert enjoyed CB radio and watching NASCAR races. Breakfast was his favorite time of day, and he could often be found at Huddle House or McIntosh Coffee Shoppe enjoying a bowl of grits and warm glass of coffee.
Surviving are his son, Robert Steven “Steve” Brown and Teresa Adams, who he loved like a daughter; as well as longtime friends, Kenneth and Ann Thornton.
In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by close friends: Doyle Kay, Gopher Scoggins, and George Adams.
Funeral services celebrating Robert’s life will be conducted on Tuesday evening, July 30, at 5:00p.m. in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home. Burial will be in the Concord United Methodist Church cemetery. Officiating will be the Rev. Tim Adams. The family will greet friends immediately following the service
At Robert’s request, please dress casually and omit flowers. If desired, contributions may be made in his memory to Concord United Methodist Church, 2515 Harmony Road, Elberton, GA 30635 or to American Cancer Society, PO Box 1685, Atlanta, GA 30301.
