Robert Calvin Mathews died Sunday morning, March 4, 2012 at the age of 91, after a lengthy illness. He was born at home in Oglethorpe County on September 13, 1920. He served as an Army infantryman in Germany and Austria during World War II.After working at Lockheed Aircraft in Marietta for thirty years he retired at age 55 as a lathe machinist supervisor.He was an avid hunter and fisherman all his life and took pleasure in processing and cooking wild game and fish. He was an artist and enjoyed painting animal scenes and landscapes. As an young man he worked on the family farm and acquired a love for gardening that continued throughout his life. He also was a numismatist, collecting old US coins.He enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, and especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of seventy years, Evelyn Seymour Mathews; his brother Wallace and sister-in-law Rubynell; his son Terry and daughter-in-law Gail; his brother-in-law Lewis and sister-in-law Clara and their family; his granddaughter Alisa and grandson-in-law Jeff and great-grandchildren Emma, Anna, Isabella, Josiah, Gabriella, Margaret and John; grandaughter Amy and grandson-in-law Chris and great-grandsons Ethan and Andrew; grandaughter Samantha and grandson-in-law Jonathan and great-grandson Edwin. A memorial service will be held Monday, March 5, at 3:00 pm at the Clubhouse at Venture Out in Panama City Beach, where they built a home in 1987.Pastor Henry Hazzard will officiate.Visitation will be from 6:00 - 8:00 pm on Wednesday, March 7, at Hicks Funeral Home in Elberton, GA. The funeral will be Thursday, March 8,at 11:00 am at the Hicks Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will immediately follow the service at Forest Hills Memorial Park.
