Robert Patrick “Pat” Roberts, age 97, entered into rest on Friday, June 17, 2022- one month following the death of his beloved wife, Priscilla Roberts.
Pat was born in Elberton to the late William Hughes Roberts and Agnes Smith Roberts. He was a graduate of Elberton High School and attended the University of Georgia. He was a proud Marine who served during WWII in the Mariana Islands, Okinawa, and China. During his service to his country, he was wounded three times on the battlefield and received multiple Purple Hearts as well as other commendations for heroism. When Pat returned to Elberton, he joined one of his older brothers in the poultry business and eventually became sole owner of Universal Poultry Company where he spent the rest of his working career.
Pat loved the city of Elberton and continued to serve his community as president of the Elberton Salvation Army and as president of the Elberton Country Club where he was a charter member. He was a longtime member of the Elberton First United Methodist Church where he was a founding member of the Manning co-ed Sunday School class. Pat also taught youth Sunday School class and served as a Scout Master in his early years.
Pat also loved the outdoors and spent many of his later years golfing with his friends. He also enjoyed gardening and hunting -- especially quail and rabbit. Pat loved to laugh and to make others laugh along with him. He was known to play a few practical jokes over the years and was always quick to smile with family and friends. Pat and Priscillia were also longtime members of the Granite Squares square dancing club and spent many nights dancing with their friends.
He is survived by his children, Bobby Roberts (Denise “Dee Dee”) of Elberton, Rick Roberts (Elaine) of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Donny McKellar (Tracy) of Greenwood, South Carolina; grandchildren, Larry Farner, Erica Bloomer, Katie Barnhart, Brett Hart, Tyler Roberts, Courtney Roberts, and Jacob Roberts; three great grandchildren.
