Roger Owen Childs

Mr. Roger Owen Childs, 85 of Childston Dr. Elberton, GA passed away Friday, August 30, 2024 at his home.

Mr. Childs was born in Elberton, GA on August 26, 1939 to William Calvin Childs and Orelia McGee Childs. He was a faithful member of Bethel E Baptist Church since his childhood. Roger was a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ and sought opportunities to share God’s love and promises with all who would listen. This led him into mission work in West Virginia that he enjoyed.

Roger worked at Verdery Pulpwood Company for many years until he started Childs Pulpwood Company that he owned and operated till his retirement. Roger loved to farm and garden and did so for several years before he developed his farm into estate lots for other home owners that became known as Childston Estate.

Roger is survived by his only grandchild: Haley Ragon of Durham, NC, two sisters and brother-in-laws: Nancy Jo Childs Payne and John Wesley Payne, Linda Childs Madden and Jerry Madden; brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Wallace and Joellyn Edwards, sister-in-law: Iris Fernandez and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his wife: Gloria Ann Edwards Childs, his daughter: Natalie Ann Childs Ragon, his parents: William Calvin Childs and Orelia McGee Childs, sisters: Myrtle Childs Barrett, Joyce Childs Jones and his brother: Sidney Childs.

Funeral services to celebrate Roger’s life will be held 12PM, Tuesday, September 3, graveside at Bethel E Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. Scott E. Mize, granddaughter Ms. Haley Ragon and niece Mrs. Laura McTier officiating. The family will receive friends from 6PM to 7:30PM Monday night at Berry Funeral Home.

Pallbearers will be Wally Edwards, Vince Fernandez, Shea Loftis, Randall Childs, Mark Payne and Jeremy Madden. Honorary pallbearers will be George Barrett and George Oglesby.

Flowers are accepted and memorials can be made in Roger’s memory to Gideons International P.O. Box 6211 Elberton, GA 30635 or to Bethel E Baptist Church, 2576 Calhoun Falls Highway Elberton, GA 30635.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt Thank You for the loving care Roger received by Bristol Hospice nurse, Jessica Lunsford, and all other support staff. Also the excellent care and concern given by caregivers: Janet and Jerry Williams, Madison, Tiara and Glendora. Lastly, a sincere heartfelt Thank You to Wallace and Joellyn Edwards who have walked life’s journey with Roger and his late wife Gloria Childs.
