Sara Jane Cordell Maxwell, born on September 3, 1922, in Elbert County, peacefully passed away on April 10, 2024, surrounded by her loving family. A proud centenarian, she was 101 years of age. “Granny”, as she as affectionately known by every one who knew and loved her, was a woman of remarkable strength and grace, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be cherished by those who knew her.
Sara's life was one dedicated to caring for her family. A graduate of Bowman High School, she chose to be a devoted stay-at-home wife and mother until her children were grown. Following this, she embarked on a new chapter at Comer Manufacturing where she worked as a seamstress. Even in retirement, Sara's nurturing nature shone through as she dedicated her time to babysitting her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She had a deep passion for flowers and loved tending to her garden, nurturing her blooms with the same tenderness and loved she exhibited to her family. An unwavering loyalty to the Braves and UGA football showcased her spirited support for her favorite teams.
A lifelong member of Deep Creek Baptist Church, she devoted herself to the church. She served as Sunday school teacher for the primary class for over 20 years, was a member and past Treasurer of the church's Woman's Missionary Union, served on the fellowship committee, and sang in the church choir.
Among Sara's proudest accomplishments was witnessing her family expand across five generations—a testament to the love and values she instilled in each member. She was truly the heart of her family, radiating warmth and kindness in all that she did.
She is survived by her daughter, Gayle Cobb of Hartwell; son, Lindy Maxwell of Elberton; grandchildren: Rhonda (Bobby) Dunn, Rene` (Mike) Turner, Marc (Ashley) Brady, Josh Maxwell, and Jodi (Shane) Tombyll: great-grandchildren: Brady (Michelle) Turner, Andy (Megan) Turner, Corey (Chloey) Dunn, Allie (Curt) Gammon, Austin Tombyll, Taylor Tombyll, Max Brady, Ben Brady, and Eli Brady; and great-great-grandchildren: Peyton Gammon, Ryleigh Golden, and Brooklynn Turner.
Mrs. Maxwell is preceded in death by her parents, Lindsey Mell Cordell and Frances Ginn Cordell; husband of 58 years, Fred Thomas Maxwell; daughter, Brenda Carol Maxwell; son-in-law, Charlie Cobb; and siblings: Ralph Cordell, Charles Cordell, and Hilda Little.
The family is at the home of Bobby and Rhonda Dunn, 1692 Deep Creek Road, Dewy Rose, and will receive friends on Saturday, April 13, from 10:00-10:45a.m. at Deep Creek Baptist Church. Funeral services will follow at 11:00a.m. in the church sanctuary. Granny Sara will be laid to rest with her husband and daughter in the Deep Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.
Flowers are accepted and contributions may be made in her memory to Deep Creek Baptist Church Women’s Ministry, 2235 Nickville Road, Dewy Rose, GA 30634.
The family extends their sincerest appreciation to Granny Sara's caretakers, Darlene Williams, Mattie Williams, Mozelle Hill, and Eloise McCarty, for their compassionate care as well as to Sandra White, Granny's honorary daughter.
