Mr. Shelby Clyde (Blackie) Gortney, age 94, of Elberton, passed away with his family at his side on Thursday, September 09, 2010 at Elbert Memorial Hospital He was the son of the late Shell and Bertha Clyde Gortney. Mr. Gortney was preceded in death by his wife, Agnes Acree Gortney and son, George Donald Smith. Mr. Gortney served in the U. S. Army during World War II.He worked in the furniture business in Cordele for many years and then enjoyed working with his son in their landscaping business.He found great enjoyment in vegetable gardening. A devoted and cherished father, he is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Gilda and Larry Guest of Elberton; grandchildren, Alec and Carrie Guest; Erin Guest; and great grandchildren, Lexe, Tanner, and Ian. A celebration of Mr. Gortney’s life will be at 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 11 in the chapel of Hicks Funeral Home with Rev. Kenny Martin officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Interment will follow after the services at Elmhurst Cemetery.
