Susan Raines Mattox Hill, 87, longtime resident of The Haven of Our Lady of Peace in Pensacola, Florida died peacefully Wednesday January 6, 2016, surrounded by family. Susan was born August 30, 1928, to Dr. Benjamin Bibb Mattox and Florence Settle Mattox in Elberton, Georgia. She graduated from Elbert County High School, attended Wesleyan College in Macon, and graduated from The University of Georgia in Athens with a BA in Sociology. She married Thomas Harrison Hill in Elberton on August 2, 1958. Susan worked in the Elbert County Health Department until the birth of her first child. She devoted herself to raising her children and was involved in the community. She was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader, PTA Secretary, and Sunday school teacher. Susan returned to work as a secretary when her children entered high school and college. She retired from The Children's Home Society in Pensacola, Florida. Susan enjoyed dancing, knitting, reading, and was known as quite a good cook. Staff and friends from The Haven know how much she enjoyed classic movies from Hollywood's golden age. She was known for her warmth and thoughtfulness, and for her sense of humor. She is survived by her daughter Ann Phillips (Dale) of Pensacola, her son Ben Hill (Sabrina) of Gulf Breeze, and five grandchildren Hayley Phillips of Tampa, and Kira, Ian, Zoe, and Quinten Hill of Gulf Breeze. Her husband Tom preceded her in death. A Memorial Service was held on Sunday, January 10, 2016 at 2:00 PM in the chapel at The Haven with Chaplain Jim Palmer officiating. Rose Lawn Funeral Home of Gulf Breeze was in charge of local arrangements. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to The Haven of Our Lady of Peace through the Sacred Heart Foundation.
