Emblem

Mr. Thomas Frederick "Tom" List, Jr., 81, of Lake Forest Drive, Elberton, GA, husband of Diane McInnis List, went to be with the Lord he so faithfully served on Sunday, August 13, 2023, at his residence.

Born in Dayton, OH on March 25, 1942, Tom was the only child of Thomas Frederick List, Sr. and Willie Mae Turner List. After graduating high school, Tom attended the University of Dayton where he obtained a master’s degree in civil engineering.

He moved to New Orleans, LA following college graduation to begin work. It was in New Orleans where Tom met and fell in love with Verna Diane McInnis, and she proudly became his wife on March 2, 1974. He ultimately gained employment with the US Army Corp of Engineers where he would remain throughout his career. In 1978, the List family relocated to Elberton, GA for Tom to work on the Richard B. Russell Dam construction team. He retired from Richard B. Russell Dam and the US Army Corps of Engineers in 2009.

Once in Elberton, he became a member of Northside Baptist Church before joining First Baptist Church. At FBC Elberton, Tom served several terms as a deacon, was a member of the choir, and attended Celebrate Recovery faithfully. He was a faithful prayer warrior who spent many hours in the church’s prayer room. Tom was also a member of Gideons International. He never met a stranger, and used every opportunity that was presented to him to share the Gospel of Christ.

A very humble man, Tom was never one to talk about himself. He was extremely knowledgeable about a varied array of subjects and used his knowledge to make the world a better place. Tom prided himself in being able to fix and construct almost anything. He enjoyed helping his family and friends build Pinewood Derby cars, many of which placed in the event.

Tom was a veteran of the United States Army, and remained an extremely patriotic man his entire life. He looked forward to attending the Veterans Day Program at Elbert County High School each year. Tom was always a gentleman, never allowing a lady to walk by without standing or removing his cap.

In addition to his parents, he was greeted in Heaven by his daughter, Elizabeth Marie List; and granddaughter, Evangeline McKenna “Evie” List.

He is survived by Diane, his wife of 49 years; his children: David Thomas List and his wife Bray of Hartwell, Sarah Hope List of Elberton, and Evan Dakota List of Elberton; grandchildren: Donavon Troy List, Simon McInnis List, and Rowan McLane List; and a host of other relatives and friends.

The family is at the residence and will greet friends on Thursday, August 17, from 1:00-1:45p.m. in the Sanctuary at First Baptist Church of Elberton. Memorial services will follow at 2:00p.m. in the church sanctuary with the Rev. Tim Adams officiating.

Flowers are accepted and contributions may be made in Tom’s memory to the Ramp Ministry at First Baptist Church of Elberton, 132 Heard Street, Elberton, GA 30635.
