Tommie Gaines Ward, affectionately known as "Mama Tommie", 93, of 1547 William Smith Road, Elberton, wife of 58 years to the late Robert Clay Ward, passed away Friday morning, July 6, 2012, at Elbert Memorial Hospital. Mrs. Ward was born in Elbert County, May 31, 1919, to the late Fred and Clara Teasley Gaines. She was a member of Vans Creek Baptist Church and a retired seamstress. The last surviving member of her immediate family, she was the oldest of seven children. Left to cherish her memories are her children and their spouses, Mary Jean and Fred Ficquett of Elberton, Cecelia and Sam Gerrard of Anderson, South Carolina, and Kenneth John Ward of Elberton; five grandchildren, Tina Moore, Greg Ertzberger, Cristal Ward, Michael Ward, and Mandi Hix; 12 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. In addition to her parents and husband, she is preceded in death by a son, Harold David Ward. Funeral services celebrating her life will be held at 3PM Sunday, July 8, in the Memorial Chapel of Berry Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Elmhurst Cemetery. The Ward family is at the residence, 1547 William Smith Road, and will receive friends at Berry Funeral Home from 1-2:30PM Sunday. In honor of Mrs. Ward's love for flowers, flowers will be accepted.
