Charles Travis Powell Sr., 84, passed away on March 6, 2012. He is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Vivian, son Dr. Charles T Powell, Jr. and daughter-in-law Anita and daughter Lynn P Edwards, 5 grandchildren, sisters Mary Brown of Elberton, Georgia, and Jean Emerson of Greenville, South Carolina, and a brother Fred Gulley of Anderson, South Carolina. A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, March 10, 2012 at 4:00pm at Bethel United Methodist Church, 103 King Street, Bethune, SC. A visitation will be held following the service. Brown-Pennington-Atkins Funeral Home is serving the family. Memorials to honor his life can be made to Bethel United Methodist Church, PO Box 275, Bethune, SC 29009. Travis was a loving husband, father, and "Papa." He was cherished by his family, friends, and all who knew him. He retired from Sandhill Telephone Co-op in 1994 after 31 years. His retirement was filled with family, golf, and service to his church and community. He was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church where he served as chairman of the Board of Trustees and treasurer for many years. He was a member of the Bethune Lions Club for over 50 years serving in many capacities and was awarded the prestigious Melvin Jones Award and also Lion of the Year. He was a member of the Lynchwood Lodge for 60 years and was the treasurer for 33 years. He also was a member of the American Legion Post 17 where he served as 4th Vice Commander. He served on the Bethune Town Council for several years and on the Board of Trustees of Kershaw County Memorial Hospital from 1981-88 serving as chairman for one year.
