Turnes Clayton Simmons, Sr., 75, of 1766 Washington Highway, Elberton, husband of Joyce Almond Simmons, passed away Saturday morning, June 9, 2012, at Athens Regional Medical Center. Mr. Simmons was born in Elbert County, August 8, 1936, to the late Willie D. and Hassie Hammond Simmons. He was Baptist by faith and a retired stonecutter in the granite industry. Left to cherish his memories are his wife of 53 years, Joyce Almond Simmons of the home; children and spouses, Yvonne and Mike Burden of Dewy Rose and Turnes Clayton, Jr. and Wendy Simmons of Chesapeake, Virginia; brothers, Willie Simmons and Joe Simmons, both of Elberton; sister, Jimmie White of Hartwell; eight grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services celebrating his life will be held at 11AM Monday, June 11, in the Berry Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. David McConnell officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Hills Memorial Park. The family is at the residence, 1766 Washington Highway, Elberton, where they will receive friends. Expressions of sympathy, in lieu of flowers, may be donations made in his honor to Northside Baptist Church Building Fund.
