Mrs. Verdun Lyle Johnson Herndon, 89, of Highland Avenue, Elberton, passed away on Tuesday, March 28, 2017, at her residence. She was twice married, first for 30 years to the late George Lee Johnson and second for 21 years to the late Fred Herndon.
Mrs. Herndon was born in Hart County on November 27, 1927, daughter of the late Lamar Lyle and Belle Treadwell Lyle. She was a graduate of Hart County High School. She worked at Elberton Manufacturing Company and retired as an Elbert County School Bus Driver after 28 years of service. She was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church and the Elberton VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
Survivors include her daughters: Trudy and Jerry King, Tammy Fortson and Ronald Hall, and Laura and Mark Carrington, all of Elberton; grandchildren: Marty and Jean King, Mendy and Travis Christian, and Jamie Carrington; great-grandchildren: Matthew and Katie King and Madelyn and Tait Christian; brother-in-law, Tommy Johnson; and special friends: Theodosia Brunson and Ronnie Hughes.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, April 1, at 12:30 in the Bethlehem United Methodist Church Cemetery with the Rev. Billy Lewis officiating.
The family is at their respective homes and will receive friends at Berry Funeral Home from 11:00a.m.-12:00noon prior to the service on Saturday.
Flowers are accepted and those wishing may make contributions in her memory to the New Cemetery Fund at Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 1328 Fairway Drive, Elberton, GA 30635.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to Patsy Cruce, RN and the entire staff at Homestead Hospice for the excellent care the was given to Mrs. Herndon.
