Wenona Dickerson Woody, 91 of Elberton, GA, died Monday, May 27, 2013, at Elbert Memorial Hospital. She was born January 17, 1922, in Elbert County, GA a daughter of the late William Alexander and Icie Eavenson Dickerson. Wenona graduated from Royston High School in 1938. She worked 30 years at Elberton Mills in the weave room and was a member of Northside Baptist Church for 29 years. She was lovingly known as “Mema” by her family, and “Woody” to many of her friends. She enjoyed spending time with her family, her church family, her Petersburg Towers family and her many friends. She was a resident of Petersburg Towers, Elberton, GA for 29 years and a member of the Ambassadors Sunday School Class at Northside Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William O. Woody; sisters, Sara Clardy and Pauline Dickerson; and a brother, Horace Dickerson. Funeral services will be Thursday, May 30, 2013, at 2:00 P.M. at Northside Baptist Church with Rev. David McConnell and Rev. Sonny Peavy officiating. Burial will follow at Deep Creek Baptist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6-8 P.M. at Berry Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Northside Baptist Church, Building Fund, 384 North Oliver St. Elberton, GA 30635, or American Diabetes Foundation,225 Peachtree St. NE Suite 550 Atlanta, GA 30303. Surviving are her children, Ken Woody and wife Eloise of Santee, SC and Gail Carnes and husband Perry of Anderson, SC; grandchildren, Darlene McAlhany of Branchville, SC, Cindy Hargis of Branchville, SC, Lynn Brann and husband Bill of Pinebluff, AK, LeAnne Carnes of Anderson, SC, Carla Carnes of Anderson, SC, Brad Woody and wife Amy of Darlington, SC, and Chad Woody and wife Julie of Hamlet, NC; 13 great-grandchildren; 9 great great grandchildren; sister, Janice Slay of Elberton, GA; and a brother, Paul Dickerson of Piedmont, SC; numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Dr. Mark Daniel and entire staff at The Medical Center of Elberton, the nursing and administrative staff at Elbert Memorial Hospital and United Hospice Staff for their special care during her illness. The family would like to thank all who visited, sent flowers or cards and a special thank you to her niece Sandra Bridges for her loving care and support.
