William Hanvey "Bill" Vaughan

Mr. William Hanvey “Bill” Vaughan, 94, of Elberton, husband of 70 years to the late Barbara Haynes Vaughan, passed away on Tuesday, August 25, 2020, at his daughter’s home in Covington.

Mr. Vaughan was born in Elbert County on December 9, 1925, the youngest of ten children born to George Alexander Vaughan and Alma Maude Hanvey Vaughan. He was a U.S. Army Veteran having served during WWII, and was awarded a Purple Heart, in addition to other medals, for being wounded during the Battle of Luzon. Mr. Vaughan was a member and former deacon of First Baptist Church of Elberton. He retired from General Motors as General Manager of the South Eastern Chevrolet Division after 30 years of service. He and Barbara enjoyed their retirement years spent at “The Farm” on Stinchcomb Road.

Survivors include his children and their spouses: Gloria and Ronnie Blake of Jonesboro, Scherry and Bob Bridwell of Lawrenceville, Tommy and Melissa Vaughan of Braselton, and Gina Vaughan of Covington; seven grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by an infant son, George Vaughan; and nine siblings.

Funeral services celebrating his life will be held on Saturday, August 29, at 4 o’clock at Dewy Rose Baptist Church with his nephew, the Rev. Cary Kerlin officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Bob Strong, Ronnie Blake, Bob Bridwell, Kenny Blake, Tim White, and Joey Chapman honored as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service at the church.
