William Calvin “Bill” Irby, 87, of Elberton passed away on Thursday August 8, 2024, at Elbert Memorial Hospital with his family by his side.
Bill was born in Athens, GA, on February 1, 1937, he was the son of the late Guy William Irby and Myrtle Grace Landrum Irby. Also proceeding him in death were his brother, Tommy Irby; and niece, Lori Irby.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Juliella “Julie” Curtis Irby, of the home; son, Dr. William Curtis Irby (Alicia) of Carrollton; daughter, Cathi Irby Jones (Dan) of Elberton; grandchildren: Brooke Jones of Elberton, Drew Irby (Sarah) of Baton Rouge, LA, Amanda Jones Brown (Tyler) of Macon, Alex Irby (Angel) of Newnan, and Matthew Irby (Lindsey) of Greenville, SC; great-granddaughters: Madeline, Morgan, and Ella Grace Irby of Baton Rouge, LA, Avery Algood of Elberton, and Carter Brown of Macon; and a host of nieces and nephews
Bill graduated from Athens High School in 1955, and was a 1958 Graduate of Young Harris College. He was employed by Georgia Power Company and retired from their Royston office where he served as local manager. He helped organize and served as the first President of the Royston Downtown Development. He was a member of the Royston Rotary Club where he served as president and the Jaycees of Hartwell.
Upon his retirement, Bill and Julie enjoyed traveling with friends across the US and Canada. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, as well as spending quality time with family and friends. His grandkids considered him not only their Papa, but their friend.
The family is at the residence and will receive friends on Monday, August 12, 2024, at 1:30 until 2:45 at Berry Funeral Home. Funeral services celebrating Bill's life will follow at 3:00 and will held in the chapel of Berry Funeral Home, with the Reverend Ray Austin officiating. Burial will follow at Elmhurst Cemetery with Drew Irby, Alex Irby, Matthew Irby, Tyler Brown, George Lewis, and Robert Williams serving as pallbearers.
